SPIRITS HUDDLING

Our U.S.  founding father ancestors’ spirits must be huddling together seriously concerned over the state of our  union.    They may be wondering…..

--will our constitution’s checks and balances be sufficient to preserve our democratic republic’s ideals?

--will the executive branch continue to disrespect the morality, ethics, and values that are the soul of our country?

--will the executive branch be prevented from dictatorially running roughshod over
the will of the majority of the people?

--will legislative branch members have the courage to vote against actions they don’t really believe in to appease the executive branch?

--will the judicial branch become a rubberstamp for executive branch acts?

  1. Will Republican leaders grow a spine and return to the roots of their party?

    1. The true roots may have degenerated. Not sure what it will take for them to realize they may well have sold out the soul of their party, and our democracy, for power and that they can't control their grasping prevaricating narcasistic leader -- until it's too late -- a leader stoking unwarranted fear in the name of security, stimulating dissension rather than unity, catering to the basest of human instincts, unable to tolerate opposition to his ideas, systematically destroying trust, who's following a dictator's playbook, along with the support of a mostly well-meaning minority number of our population, much as happened before which documented history shows us.

  2. I think there are a lot of Founding Fathers restless in their graves right now. If nothing else we're all getting a get Civics lessons on how our government is SUPPOSED to work. They are live streaming the three Judge panel that will rule today.

    1. We'll hope the checks for balance are sufficient and the Justice system will maintain some integrity.

  3. Maybe our early ancestor's spirits are enjoying the rebellious nature of all that is going on. They too were rebels against the "old school" rule. LOL

    1. Probably so, but fiercely worried the democratic republic they established isn't undermined from within.

  4. The irony of your post is that if you have rightie friends you know, this was exactly what they feared for 8 years in terms of the executive branch. They thought Obama would never let go of power. Now they're happy and the left is all upset. What a time ;)

    1. I wish it was as simple as you describe -- political party tit for tat -- but this is quite different IMHO. There's no comparison with executive branch actions during previous Presidents in my lifetime, including President Obama -- maybe with the exception of Nixon -- since they weren't trying to undermine our basic democratic republic system of government as the current leader and his staff's actions indicate is happening now. If this current leader has his way, is not curtailed, our nation will be left with an outer shell of a government, going through the motions of being a democracy -- for all who agree with him -- much like Russia and Putin, also similar to what is occurring in Turkey.

    2. I don't disagree. We are talking about what the right believed. Because the left liked what he did, it didn't bother them with his executive actions. But if you have right winger friends, they did see it the way you do but in reverse. They feared the direction, thought he was destroying us and that he would declare martial law to stay in power. The left and right (1/3 of each) want the exact opposites done. Moderates, like me, tend to lean one way or the other which makes them sometimes with the left and sometimes the right-- but not want violence at all.

The concern you express is exactly what the right felt. I have rightie friends and had them posting on FB. I know it's not a comfort to lefties but just understand, they didn't want much of what Obama did. They feared his power and how the Dems were trying to take over the power of the people.

The violent attempts now to scare the country into restoring what the left wants will not help them with the moderates, who don't like violent attacks (just heard of a townhall where they threw spitballs at the Republican state leader to prevent him talking).

I get it how worried the left is. A lot of the concerns worry me too, but it is the same thing and the people on the right are no more evil than those on the left.

Right and left want different things and the Education Secretary just confirmed is a good example. I didn't want her confirmed either but she is after what the right has been after for years-- vouchers. My senators voted against her because Democrats don't want vouchers and she comes across as not qualified. but we are not doing well by comparison to other countries with our education system. We are behind most for where our kids stand in testing. Some states, like Oregon, have record numbers of dropouts. We are in the bottom of the states for how many kids quit without high school degrees. I think we all know something is wrong-- just how to fix it is where we disagree big time.

It won't be a fun two years and maybe more of the left cannot convince the states voting in 2018 that their ideas are best for the whole of the nation. As it stands, the ones I know who voted for Trump (not me) are pleased. It's the ones who did not who are upset.

    3. I think you're quite correct that's how a lot of people think and believe. I don't think the previous administrations actions remotely parallel what the current leader's actions from the time he became a candidate, if not before, are leading toward. Therefore, there's little comparison, but a large but minority number of people don't seem to recognize that fact -- instead reducing facts to just being conflicting political parties as usual. All I can say is, read history about the steps that occur which result in democracy being lost -- or never fully developing -- as is occurring in Turkey. Or, we could have a shell of constitutional freedoms, even elections -- like Russia.

There aren't that many federal legislative offices open in 2018 to have a major difference. but will be important to vet those candidates carefully and all local candidates every election.

    4. A lot of it is what someone wants to see the country do. The left felt it had made progress toward certain positive values, which the right felt were not positive and were destroying what the country stood for. With Trump, it's not just who he is, which most of us don't know much about and if primary info comes from certain msm sources, they will only know negative stuff. The other part of this is he's trying to change the direction we've been going with a belief it was unhealthy and hurting a lot of the country. What the truth is of that or what Obama did is not easy to discern. All I am saying is if you are on one side of the divided, without friends or family on the other, you see it very differently than someone who knows people from both sides. If someone is going to change the direction of the country back to what it had been with Democratic control, they better be prepared to give reasons and make points that are responsible. In other words pay for what we want not put it on the tab. That is true of both sides of the divide for how they tend to not be willing to pay the price themselves and want someone else to pay it. Violent responses though are more likely to entrench what is happening than to overturn it. And fear talk only persuades those already afraid. A big part of this is not just federal leadership but state where many states have turned to Republican ideas with the support of their citizens. California's threat to secede isn't likely to do much to convince them they are wrong about the threat from the left to the stability of the nation. It isn't what is true right now on either side-- it's what people believe and often with a lot of rhetoric to back them up as well as fake news that suits our prejudices and where many never bother to check out if it's true. I am writing about that for a future blog in the damage that fake news does and it isn't remotely all coming from one side or the other. It's a whole industry.

    5. Yes, lots of varied views, deliberately created confusion and distraction, particularly courtesy of the chaos deliberately instituted by the nation's current leader. Doing so does serve to keep the focus away from all his basic ethical and moral violations that are insulting to citizens including conflict of interests concerns. He has a proclivity for alleging there are problems where there are none i.e. voter fraud as another government demeaning tactic, etc. The Administration certainly does their share of creating fake news with their falsehoods probably believed by some which is why they do it. You'll have much to write a blog post about as others do it, too.

  5. I have faith that the center will hold. Even now Trump is discovering that the president is not a dictator. I also like Judge Gorsuch. We will get a conservative judge, no matter what. As long as he follows the Constitution, all will be well.

    1. Yes, it is embarrassing, but ultimately the strength of the majority of our nation's people will demonstrate the viability of our democratic republic.

  7. 45 heralds the dawn of the inyerface Theocorporatocracy. Before now, it was leashed and veiled. He and his handlers have Big Plans. Womens' rights being high on the list.

He and the puppeteers frankly terrify me.

    1. "Theocorporatocracy" -- descriptive term for the type government we may be at risk of having, including putting women back in their proper place, even if some are part of the governing crowd. I still hold out hope checks and balances will prevent them from betraying majority voter views of our democratic republic.

  8. The latest fiasco at Mar a Lago and his behavior toward the Prime Minister of Japan confirm that he is even more stupid than we thought. He'll be out soon. So let's not waste our time analyzing him or his fans but just resist! All this wishy-washy stuff about how Trump backers have a point is ridiculous. They are just hostile people who pin all their failures on others. I know a few of them, and, like their hero, they know nothing and are proud of it!
Liberals have traditionally been too nice to their enemies, but that's over!

  9. Focusing on any and all actions this Administration takes that don't represent the values of our nation definitely need to be met with resistance.

  10. I was never really involved in politics, but now I've been signing petitions and have written to both our state senators. All we can do is resist and persist.
