LACMA MEGALITH ARRIVAL

The granite megalith destined to become part of Michael Heizer's "Levitated Mass" arrived at Los Angeles County Museum of Art on Saturday, March 10th in the early morning hours just before dawn.

The gigantic boulder's journey began on Tuesday, February 28th, traveling only at night at 5 - 8 miles per hour through 4 counties and 22 cities with stops in 8 communities along the route. The journey was not without complications with streetlights and trees but minimal traffic issues.

Levitated Mass is expected to open to the public in early summer, 2012.

Thanks to all for sharing your reactions and thoughts in comments on the two preceding posts about this earthwork art exhibit.

Here's a video of the football field long transport with the megalith arriving at LACMA:

  1. Wow...what an event. Lots of excitement...and a LOT of people waiting for the arrival. It was cute watching people go up to the trailer to touch the covered Levitated Mass. That sure stopped traffic for a while... ~Joy

  2. It seems it will be a rock and display worth putting on any list of the things to do in LA. We have a couple of megalithic size rocks up the Columbia River Gorge. One we used to climb with steps all the way up although not sure if it's still open to the public. I don't think I'd be doing it again but remember fondly climbing to the top with other friends the night after high school graduation.

I've always had a thing for rocks, especially big round ones such as I've seen in Montana and Wyoming. The natives of that are called then grandfather stones for having been there so long. They were evidently brought in with glaciers and rounded by their journey. I always wanted some of them. I've found round rocks wherever I go, but those were a little too much to take home in the pick-up.

  3. Gee, I sure hope it's not "THE EMPERORS NEW CLOTHES" for $10 mill....! Time Will Tell, I guess.
