INCREDIBLE WEEK'S EVENTS

I’ve evolved into somewhat of a somber mood this week following my initial enthusiasm and encouragement with the overall outcome of the 2018 U.S. Midterm Elections.  Hope you’re pleased with most of the results where you live.

Initially ....
The early part of the week began with those elections encouragingly drawing a higher percentage of voters than usual.   Some results are still not tallied as the number of mail-in and provisional ballots has increased, too.   Outcomes between some candidates are so close a winner cannot be declared until the days or weeks needed to tally those ballots are completed. This is true even in our local City Council contest.   Even then, it’s possible the results could be so close that some candidates may require a ballot recount.

The previous political dominating party has become the minority party in our U.S. House of Representatives.  Hopefully, to most Americans this will mean some sort of check on our current president’s relentless dictatorial actions that many believe weaken our democracy.

They see his efforts deliberately creating chaos and divisiveness directed toward destroying citizens trust in our government.   Surreptitiously, he’s also attempting to require personal loyalty to himself, rather than to our constitution, from leaders he appoints and in all branches of government.

Given his attempt to alter our form of government this comes as no surprise – except to some who naively don’t realize this is occurring, and those still in denial who think this is just political party differences – not a matter of preserving our freedoms and democracy as our nation’s founders established in our constitution.

Insidious now, too, is our President’s relentless assault to muffle, consistently denigrate, a Fourth Estate Press that reports factual information.   He condemns them for questioning or refuting his mendacious statements and presenting other issue views as though he had no ethical or moral responsibility for stating facts to the American people.  Instead, he fluently prevaricates insultingly, in the belief the people are either too dumb to know the difference or don’t care and has previously said as much.   He leads me to wonder if he is correct.

Most of those in the President’s political party have acquiesced to him despite to what many of them once objected, as they have either changed or compromised their moral and ethical values in exchange for power – and money?   Some of those who won’t bend are simply leaving or retiring from their positions, since many of their constituents fail to recognize preserving our democratic republic is at stake.

***
Our President continues to favor one specific television network news organization reflecting that owner’s agenda, documented by many as a group that warps news content accounts.  It is no coincidence that corporation’s owner, Rupert Murdoch, has had news content control ambitions of his own, or that our President met with him in Scotland shortly after the 2016 election.

Mr. Murdoch’s organizations have often been characterized as promoting tabloid journalism.
His efforts to gain monopolistic control over all media forms to influence news content, distribution, government influence, created havoc in Great Britain years ago when he came there from Australia. Subsequently he gained U.S. citizenship to pursue his power-seeking of news control here to influence our populace -- followers would be wise to consider that family corporation’s agenda.

Murdoch has been known for interfering in editorial processes contrary to what he has vowed he wouldn’t do.  This gave concern following his Wall Street Journal purchase a few years ago.

This year Murdoch’s long-term consolidation efforts in Great Britain to obtain satellite Sky News was thwarted The Guardian reported earlier HERE.

“The Competition and Markets Authority said 21st Century Fox’s bid to take control of the 61% of Sky it does not already own was not in the public interest due to concerns about media plurality.”

“The CMA’s investigation into the deal found it would give the Murdoch family trust, which controls Fox and News Corp, the publisher of the Sun and the Times, “too much control over news providers in the UK across all media platforms and therefore too much influence over public opinion and the political agenda”.

Our Fourth Estate News Media seeking factual information from our President these next two years until our 2020 elections to report to us will likely be subjected to his increased attacks and false accusations as he has been doing.

Considering what we know about the modus operendi of this President and the news sources he favors, we need to thoughtfully exercise analysis, critical thinking and our best judgment determining the news media sources we can trust for most closely providing unadulterated content truth.  Incidentally, social media may not be the most viable source for truth, either.

Next, with the election still fresh in my mind, my attention was shocked in morning wee hours as I watched the ending of an old movie -- a news bulletin interrupted.   Tragedy struck in one of Southern California’s designated safest cities, Thousand Oaks, with a mass shooter murdering young people and a police officer.   The shooter took his own life, is thought to have been a troubled young man, possibly suffering from PTSD following overseas war experience in the military service.

Once again, many citizens voice outrage as to why laws are not enacted in an effort to control the availability of certain types of weapons, curtail how readily they can be purchased and limit those permitted to possess them.

***
Still reeling from this surreal as yet unexplained shooting event .....
devastating fires in Southern California, coincidentally, struck that same city of tragedy, the next day -- devouring homes -- additional houses continuing to be threatened.

The fire raced toward the ocean requiring the whole city of Malibu to be evacuated with the flames ravaging, then leaving some once homeowners, homeless.

Other residents in those cities still awaiting the fires becoming controlled, the area safe, so they can learn if their house has survived intact, though likely smoke-damaged.  Family members of a friend of mine are in the latter group, having had to evacuate, but fortunate to be able to stay with others in their family.

Many residents have had to seek shelter at special evacuation centers setup for accommodations with such available even for a large menagerie of pets reportedly not limited to just dogs and cats.

Incredibly, even more fires were reported .....
an entire community of 27,000 in Northern California, ironically named Paradise, was forced to evacuate.  Every structure burned to the ground.   Now, loss of life has been discovered as an increasing number of residents have been found in their vehicles -- presumed to have been stranded, trying to escape the flames.

 ***
As I publish this .....
The strong Santa Ana winds blowing off shore have given temporary way to slight on-shore breezes lessening these out of control fires intensity for a day, but only temporarily.  Humidity from the Pacific Ocean increased only slightly from the previously high of only 5%.

Predictions are that the Santa Ana high winds are returning with more dry off-shore blowing to whip these fires today, Sunday, before on shore winds resume, possibly by Tuesday evening to slightly lessen fire forces.  The fires will likely rage on as exhausted firefighters fight for containment.   We will see what the coming week brings us.

***
I do feel compelled to clarify the truth and express my outrage at one more outright falsehood perpetrated by our President.    He threatens to withhold federal funding for the California wildfires due to gross mismanagement.  California Professional Firefighters President stated:

“It is the federal government that has chosen to divert resources away from forest management, not California.”

This irresponsible U.S. President later modifies his comments to offer some support for Americans affected by these disasters.

This is such classic contradicting rhetorical behavior exhibited by our President -- designed to deliberately keep him in the news daily.  He believes all publicity, positive or negative, benefits him as his discredited attorney mentor taught him.   Most distressing to him is to be ignored which gives reason to avoid gratifying his need to have his name mentioned.   Would that all the media and every other source would cease saying anything about him for even a day, but ideally several, a week, a month – but to what antics would he resort to get our attention?

CONTROVERSIAL BROADCASTER DIES -- FOX NEWS

Roger Ailes died Thursday, April 18th reportedly following a coma due to bleeding in the brain after bumping his head when he fell.    Some people admire how he built Fox TV into a successful broadcast network.   Others have less regard for his doing so because of the methods and tactics he used -- especially the manner in which news quality was compromised -- often injected with tabloidism journalism with which Fox TV network owner Rupert Murdoch had long been associated.

Roger Ailes began his broadcasting career during the late 1950s, early ‘60s when numerous TV stations were producing live audience participation talk shows.  The Central Ohio station where I was employed was developing their own network stations’ talk shows in several Midwest states.     One station’s host was Phil Donahue.  In a  nearby Great Lakes city another corporation decided to also launch a talk show.  They pursued hiring our show’s host, but he declined their offers.    Mike Douglas became their host with Roger Ailes producing.

Later some Federal Communications Commission (FCC) ordered corporate broadcasting changes occurred causing the Douglas show and Ailes to relocate to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for a long successful program run.     Ailes continued to hone his producing, broadcasting skills.   Association with candidate/then President Richard Nixon figured in his history as did the first George Bush who became President with Ailes help.

Eventually, when Ailes came to Fox TV some have reported he began gradually infusing a political perspective into news in ways that were less impartial – fostering a news department often viewed as being  politically biased -- contrary to their slogan claiming “fair and balanced” that many viewers may have naively believed, apparently without independently verifying.

A little history .....
Several years ago I became concerned about Rupert Murdoch’s controversial actions in Great Britain’s media, so I followed what proved to be disturbing events there.  Years later I rued the day Murdoch was able to gain access to our United States media market, especially given his efforts to gain control of so much media in Great Britain and then here.

Murdoch was an Australian publisher whose early publishing career focused on “…sensationalist journalism…” as described in his Britannica biography and multiple other sources.   This lesser quality entertainment approach to news infused his publishing in GB’s media which was less than welcomed by people there who valued higher quality straight forward factual news accounts minus those sometimes allegedly questionable warpings.
Then, the Murdoch organization reputation became even more tarnished due to a phone hacking scandal and political involvements associated with some of his highest level closest employees in his growing media empire.    This affair thwarted his making more media acquisitions in Great Britain for many years.

Most recently Murdoch and his sons’  21st Century Fox corporation have resumed pursuit of  acquiring control of Sky, theBritish satellite television giant, The Guardian reports.

Britain’s regulatory review is delaying a decision on approving Murdoch’s Sky acquisition until early June elections.  Fox News sexual harassment scandal involving Ailes and more recently their star host, Bill O’Reilly who had to resign, has cast a shadow over the British review theNew York Times reports April 21, 2017.

Since I’ve been following the activities of Rupert Murdoch beginning when his type of journalism first aroused concern in Great Britain….. then when he later came to the United States…..  made media acquisitions here -- I soon encountered the name, Roger Ailes.

Viewing Murdoch’s Fox News TV network programming had long since revealed to me that much news reporting there hardly measured up to valued high quality broadcasting standards.    Learning more about Roger Ailes politicizing approach to news I expect also the senior Murdoch’s sensationalism orientation is reflected.    Their apparent support and slant for Trump as a candidate and now President is not surprising either.    At least one opinion on CNN suggests Ailes gave us Donald Trump.

I long intended to write about Roger Ailes but have increasingly wanted to do so given some of the issues of his association and friendship with Donald J. Trump.

Several years ago seeking more information about Ailes I read a biography with content documented sources.  The book is entitled “The Loudest Voice in the Room” by Gabriel Sherman – “How The Brilliant, Bombastic Roger Ailes Built Fox News – And Divided A Country.”

Insight into Fox News Department operations and news formulations is interestingly presented in this Ailes biography.   That same approach to Fox news may well continue though Ailes resigned his position last July due to sexual harassment accusations with law cases still pending, but Rupert Murdoch still owns Fox TV.  (He owns other U.S. media including the Wall Street Journal which initially had some concerned about his possible editorial influence.)

TV viewers might well appreciate reading this Ailes biography for considerations when assessing production quality and influences related to Fox’s “fair and balanced” news as well as  that of all other news media.

Television viewer ratings will continue to impact all broadcasters.   Rupert Murdoch’s son’s are expected to assume more control of the Fox TV operations, so it will be interesting to see if that results in any news quality changes differing from what their father found acceptable and what Ailes influences remain.

VETERANS DAY - CALIFORNIA SECEDE? -- PROTESTS

SALUTE TO ALL VETERANS ..

(USA wars are fought in name of all citizens)

A Tribute always and especially to WWII Veterans

---our nation would not be here today -- free as we know it -- if not for them.

T H A N K    Y O U   !

A NEW COUNTRY ?      NEW CALIFORNIA

CALIFORNIA is the biggest economy in the U.S. and the sixth largest in the world.

CALIFORNIA  population racial demographics already reflect what those of the United States of America are expected to be in 2044 -- a diverse nation of people -- based on the Census Bureau's projection:

"By 2044, the United States is projected to become a plurality nation. While the non-Hispanic White alone population will still be the largest, no race or ethnic group is projected to have greater than a 50 percent share of the nation’s total."

Some Californians are considering options for the state to secede from the United States.
Such an action is partially based on  the rhetoric which the U.S. President-elect Donald Trump  has previously directed toward various Silicon Valley business leaders and their enterprises, including media ownership.    Specifics may be read at this link to the  Guardian article describing current seceding issues.

Here is a link to the official site for California secede.

NEW INFLUENCES

The 2016 Presidential Election outcome has increased the impetus for more California residents to give serious consideration to supporting our state becoming our own country.

The degree of actual support for California's secession remains to be seen.   Other states in past years have had residents suggesting seceding for their own various reasons, most recently  as described in Texas. (by Phillip Bump, Washington Post.)

Inquisitor includes comments that select social media is suggesting  some Californians may see if  other Western states such as Oregon, Washington, Nevada  may be interested in seceding.

MY PERSPECTIVE

I presently think  this grand experiment of our democratic republic is best successfully perpetuated if California remains within the union of our fifty states plus Washington D.C.

Citizens responsibility is to consider the current needs required as we continue to
-- sustain the viability of our way of government with thoughtful voting choices
-- refine, define, change, alter and correct our mistakes by demanding officials act only
within the parameters  prescribed by these three  USA documents known collectively as

The Charters of Freedom:
Declaration of Independence
The Constitution
The Bill of Rights

The Great Questions

Has "the establishment" (including the President-elect, House of Representatives and Senate members) received, correctly processed, determined to rectify the existing  inequity situations  -- including the economic gap described in "The Rich and the Rest" by Christina Pazzanese?

How long can our nation's way of government survive as we strive ethically and morally  to provide liberty and justice for all -- to be a positive force in the world and for humanity?

ELECTION PROTESTS developed as I began this post......

This is the United States of America.    Traditionally the hallmark of our democracy has been a peaceful transition of one administration to another.   In fact, current President Obama has initiated transition arrangements following candidate Hillary Clinton's earlier concession of the 2016 Presidential election to Donald Trump.

However, the offensive nature associated with President-elect Trump's conduction of his campaign has resulted in eliciting strong emotions from voters.    That coupled with the election's outcome triggered citizen protests which began earlier Wednesday afternoon  in New York City outside his Trump Tower residence --- he was the winner when the Electoral College votes were tallied, but received fewer popular votes than his opponent.

This is the second time in the past five elections the Electoral College winner garnered fewer popular votes than the opponent.   In 2000 Al Gore won the popular vote but lost the election to George Bush following the U.S. Supreme Court's intervention to terminate controversial vote-counting in Florida.    A candidate designated to be President based on winning Electoral College votes but not the nation's  popular vote had occurred only three times before in the 1800s.

Most recent developments are that protest groups in cities from coast to coast  have amassed, saying in reference to President-elect Donald Trump, "He's not my president!", stressing Trump did not win the popular vote.    Regrettably, vandalism, disruptions, freeway traffic blockage and some arrests began to occur Wednesday night around midnight necessitating law enforcement response here in Los Angeles as I wrote this.

Typically, only a few protesters are responsible for violence in such events -- always a risk they'll infiltrate the peaceful groups, but with their own destructive motivations -- such as looters, anarchists who desire and will instigate crowd chaos for their own agenda toward overthrowing our way of government.

Fascists, too, benefit from inciting violence as often citizens will relinquish their rights and freedoms to leaders/law enforcement for promised security -- only to eventually find themselves living in an autocratic form of government, a dictatorship presided over by a demagogue systematically depriving them of their rights.

Undermining freedom in a democratic government can be a many years lengthy process, achieved in slight, incremental, sometimes seemingly innocuous small steps.   Systematic attacks and discrediting other government branches -- judicial, legislative -- also The Fourth Estate (the press) -- to create mistrust in all systems are part of the fascist pattern documented throughout history.  (Legitimate shortcomings in the branches and press must be addressed and corrected, but citizens must guard against being seduced by a leader's conspiracy intimations, intentional distortions of truth through innuendo, deliberate falsehoods.)

These, hopefully, primarily peaceful protests in additional cities around our nation continue Thursday -- they include many high school, college students of the most populous millennium generation who may be most concerned about their future.   Those of us who are older care about the younger generations and the world in which they will live long after we've departed this earth.  We must pay attention.

After Trump's weeks, months of vitriolic diatribes, misogynistic,  racist, sexist, name-calling directed toward his opponents and others, his sudden measured adoption of rational manner the final week or so of his campaign, and his speech after the election may have aroused suspicions and mistrust in the minds of many citizens -- they may be wondering:

-- who is this allegedly prevaricating,  narcissistic, sociopathic, fascist-sounding person?

-- what are the ethical and moral values of Donald Trump?

-- what does the real Donald Trump truly believe?

-- who is the real Donald Trump?

Most of our citizens do not take lightly a leader whose behavior throughout much of his presidential campaign was insulting and  boorish, to say the least.  Some citizens might also even be inclined to interpret his tactics and some language he has used as mirroring that of fascists whose similar activities, words and actions are described in histories of the nineteenth and twentieth century.  Fascism is not compatible with the U.S. Constitution.

Let our republic have a peaceful democratic transition to the legally elected new leadership.

Let us actively oversee all actions of those we've entrusted to occupy government positions.

Let us use our votes and  all legal means to ensure governing individuals each actually fulfill their Oath of Office.

Let us guard and protect our privacy,  rights and freedoms.

SPIRIT LIFTING 4th of JULY

Juno is in orbit around Jupiter!

What mysteries about earth's beginnings will we learn?

My spirit is lifted with renewed optimism for the future as I experience feelings of patriotism and pride from Independence Day 2016.    I welcome positive events that stimulate such reactions for me reinforcing that I  live in a great nation and am committed to my country continuing to be so.  These are a couple events prompting such views.

NASA scientists at Jet Propulsion Lab shared on the internet their ecstatic reactions to the Juno spacecraft's successful precise movement into orbit around Jupiter after a five year journey from Earth.  I viewed NASA's live streaming video of this event July 4th night simultaneously with PBS's program Capitol Fourth orchestral patriotic music playing and spectacular colorful visions of  fireworks filling my television screen.

One NASA scientist observed  how Italian Astronomer Galileo in 1610 first observed moons moving around Jupiter.  This was just one of his many discoveries but one with profound implications for scientific study.

This Guardian link features a video of the NASA scientists event mentioned above.

Hope everyone had a special 4th.

LABOR DAY CHALLENGE

Enjoy this long Labor Day weekend which I often think symbolizes the end of summer.   The school year soon resumes for those few young people who still adhere to the traditional scheduling of my youth.    Our Claremont Colleges have their students filtering onto the campuses, too.

Here in Southern California our spectacularly large month long Los Angeles County Fair has opened this weekend.    The fried specialties booths determined to outdo each other and each previous years epicurean delight (depending on your taste) promises deep-fried Kool-Aid, deep-fried mocha syrup and deep-fried watermelon.

Many exciting acts will be appearing this month, including The Beach Boys, Leann Rimes, and Earth, Wind and Fire.   Every night precisely at 10  P.M.  I’ll hear the sounds of exploding fireworks as the southwest sky is filled with the sparkling  shimmering lights shooting upward, then fading away during their downward trajectory.

Labor Day is an annual celebration that was first observed in 1882 in New York.  Twelve years later in 1894 Congress unanimously passed legislation President Grover Cleveland immediately signed into law establishing Labor Day a national holiday.   This was a consequence of our government’s reconciliation with the labor movement following several confrontational events, but most significantly workers deaths in a conflict with the U.S. military and U.S. Marshalls.

Tensions between government, business and labor have persisted through the next one hundred and seventeen years to the present.     Organized labor’s influence has weakened in later  years.    Numerous factors have contributed to this situation, including a decrease in manufacturing workers as those jobs have gone to other countries.   Also, mechanization with robots has replaced some factory workers.

Recent years the financial debacle impacting the U. S. and other nations has taken a toll on work force numbers.    Political ideologies in some state governments has resulted in labor unions being under assault as this fairness balancing act continues between public and private management with worker rights.

Skilled labor traditionally goes to the lowest bidder which has come to be in a country other than the United States.   The “knowledge work” associated with the middle class workers is also gradually being exported as described by PeterWilby in The Guardian.    We are told that re-education will compensate for these job losses, but that solution’s reality may be debatable Wilby notes.

Consider this, in the United States “the richest 20% own 84%  of our nation’s wealth, the second 20% own 11%, and the rest of society own 4%”  as graphically shown in a colorful pie chart at “The Chronicle” based on “a recent study by Dan Ariely, James B. Duke professor of behavioral economics…”

If the absence of employment opportunities persists for an increasing majority of U.S. workers, I have great concern that we’re going to have a lot more unrest in this country.

If there was ever a time when organized labor representing public and private skilled and professional workers needed to examine exactly how to best serve those they represent, that time is now.  Goals with objectives achieved through strategies of the past may need considerable re-examination and adjustment.

Likewise, government and management need to make similar adaptations in the best interests of our nation.    Labor and management may need to work together in ways they may never have considered possible in the past because we live in an entirely different world today.

The preservation of our nation as one that offers all of our citizens the opportunity to join the ranks of a flourishing middle class, even aspiring to greater wealth, should be a fundamental national goal.
