OBAMA FOLDING ON SOCIAL SECURITY?

OBAMA SELLING OUT ..... ELDERS and MIDDLE CLASS?

Is President Obama negotiating Social Security cuts and essentially increased taxes for the middle class?

Read this Huffington Post account:

What is Chained CPI and what does it do to Social Security cost of living increases?

Read this:

Social Security and the 2013 Cola were discussed by Ronni Bennett at "Time Goes By" in October during the Presidential campaign.

"Social Security has nothing to do with the deficit!" Bernie Sanders has explained.

Another instance requiring we express our views to our Senators and Representatives.

  1. It doesn't look good on that proposal and makes no sense as if you look at pork being higher but beef lower; so you could buy beef, then the next time it's in reverse and the end result is they never recognize an increase in cost. Figures.

  2. Yes, Rain, I agree. Those who dreamed up this Chained CPI appear to have worked overtime concocting this effort to cut Social Security. Frankly, I think it's ridiculous to devise a plan on what is being presumed to be how Americans will alter our buying habits i.e for less expensive chicken versus pork or beef with cost of living changes, especially since, as you note, there can be such unpredictable market fluctuations.

  3. Maybe I'm worried more about future generations than most, having worked for years with folks who diligently planted trees they would never see mature, but I believe conversion to the chained CPI is a relatively painless way to make Social Security sustainable for many more years into the future. Current pronouncements indicate there would be some sort of protection for those with very low incomes or disabilities.

As a retired federal employee who also paid into Social Security for 17 years, I will take two hits if Chained CPI is adopted. Both would hurt, but they wouldn't hurt much. The Federal Employee Retirement Fund is in an even less sustainable position than Social Security, so strengthening it for future retirees also is a good thing.

It is not possible to compromise with anyone without offering some concessions. Chained CPI actually is a boomerang for ultra-conservative Republicans. It will strengthen programs they would like to see abolished. I think we should be backing the President on this one, not suggesting more stonewalling.

    1. Dick: Yes, compromise is impossible if only one side gives in. And that, in the current scenario, would be the people who have the least money. The very rich are holding tight to their low tax rates. The Chained CPI is a bunch of b.s. The only way that would be "fair" is if the ultra rich would also agree to having their taxes increase in a similarly "restrained" fashion. You'd think we would have learned from the Vietnam War: you can't have guns AND butter. I'm voting for butter.

  4. Unfortunately, I don't think that our President is a very effective negotiator. That said, I'm of two minds on chained CPI. For myself, I don't mind it; but, for those who are more dependent upon their Social Security payments, I worry.

I did note that, in 2013, my monthly deduction from SS payments for Part B Premium is doubled "...based on your 2011 income tax return." and a charge is instituted for prescription drug coverage which is explained as "...income-related monthly adjustment amount based on your 2011 income tax return...." I think that this is a good step toward assuring that money is in the Medicare system for those who need it.

    1. Cop Car: I don't like what I SEE when Obama is trying to explain himself. He looks like he's lying. How do I figure this? I raised 4 kids.

  5. I sent Obama a stern note on this. I told him that it made me regret the countless hours of work I gave to his campaign.

    1. You're not the only grandma who feels betrayed! Why didn't he come up with this BEFORE the election? In such a way that it would be clear what his intentions are.

  6. Obama's actions on this are making me sick to my stomach. Who on earth is advising him? Must be someone with a great big club. And the wobbly Democrats in the Senate are letting him get by with it. Nancy Pelosi? Well, as someone said today someplace, we can't share the sacrifice if we've never shared in the wealth. Who will be running the world when all of this is finished? The Mayans were on the right track. Something is ending, and it looks to be us.
