UKRAINE WAR -- RICOCHETING WINTER -- EAGLET

What a week this has been!

My life challenges seem so insignificant compared to what is occurring for so many in Ukraine.  I find myself thinking about older people and how they are experiencing the events they're encountering.   I consider how would I be able to cope.

This invasive war has significant bearing on our world as we know it.  For the sake of our younger and future generations, Ukraine's situation demonstrates our nation must preserve our republic's democracy.

SoCal weather in my area this past week gave us summer-like warm temperatures, then abruptly dropped about 20 degrees to wintertime again.   Promised rain where I live did not materialize though other areas did receive some moisture.

A second storm in recent days has brought snow to the mountains and a little rain below the foothills.  We have only a few more weeks in our ordinarily rainy season to end our drought, but only dry warmer temperatures in the 70s arrive early next week.

We welcomed new life this past week when the Big Bear Bald Eagles successfully had the first of their two eggs hatch.  Pip watch continues for the second egg for possible hatching any day now.  The warmer weather was giving way to winter's return soon after that first little fluff ball finally emerged from the eggshell.

The following video courtesy of Friends of Big Bear Valley reveals the incubating eagle literally covered in snow.  The video frame rate appears to have been ramped up at the beginning.

PEACE !

  1. For us in India, Ukraine means the evacuation of Indian students studying there. https://indianexpress.com/article/india/indians-unable-to-use-ceasefire-routes-govt-seeks-safe-corridor-for-students-7802969/

    1. News reports in our U.S. media and that of other nation's I've viewed have shown alleged discrimination against those of some nationalities being allowed to board buses for evacuation. Most recently the agreed upon ceasefire to allow evacuations from Ukraine is reported to have been violated by the invading Russians adversely affecting so many. The link you provide I will make an exception to allow since blog policy does not allow links in comments. I do hope all the Indian students are able to be safely evacuated.

  2. I know when witnessing the ravages in Ukraine. There is so much pain. One feels almost guilty about the blessings we are taking for granted of warmth, home, and feelings of safety. Am looking for a way to help.
Thanks for the eaglet shots. I missed the hatching.

    1. Even these eagles have had intruders threatening their nest so hopefully we won’t be complacent in the U.S. to allow those within our nation disrupt our peace.

  3. The first refugees have been arriving in our city, mostly women and children. A former colleague, with UK passport, now retired with Ukrainian wife and living in Odessa, has arrived in Poland but struggling to obtain visa for the wife to UK. Incredible. They are both in the 70s and not in need of any social welfare or other handouts.
Every time I watch the bald eagles, I then visit the Oamaru blue penguin nest and then the just hatched royal albatross on live cameras, both in New Zealand. Have a look out for them, easy to find on youtube and google.

    1. European nations, like yours in Germany, have certainly stepped forward to aid Ukrainians. That must be truly frustrating for your colleague, his wife and family. I hope they gain resolution soon..
Those live camera sites you mention do sound interesting, too.

  4. The Russian invasion of Ukraine is a direct threat to their national democracy and autonomy, which is why Putin has to be defeated and driven out of the country. It's encouraging that huge numbers of Ukrainians are volunteering to join the armed forces. But the British government is making it very difficult for refugees to settle here.

    1. The Ukrainians are certainly challenged to preserve their democracy and autonomy. Those courageous people may well represent what some in the rest of the free world face,IMHO, resulting in even more freedom-loving people becoming refugees.

  5. My heart is breaking for all those Ukrainians who are bravely fighting against a very brutal, cruel megalomaniac. It seems so hopeless, but I keep hoping for a miracle.

I'm surprised at that eagle keeping her eggs warm in all that snow. Wow!

    1. Those studying the eagles report on their site that the snow serves as an insulation enabling the parents to stay warm themselves and keep their eaglet and the other egg sufficiently warm.

  6. That is a nice video of that fabulous Bald Eagle parent on the nest. I am praying for a peaceful and just ending for this war in Ukraine.

  8. I've been watching the eagles as I can here and there each day, checking in. I hope the second egg is still viable.

It is truly heartbreaking that Ukraine's sovereignty has been violated this way by such a cold and vile madman as Putin. The human cost is high; fortunately the international community is rallying and responding. I hope it will be enough.

    1. I enjoy checking in on them occasionally, too, and hope that other egg hatches.

I, too, hope Ukraine can retain their sovereignty with an end to loss of life.

  9. Yes, I share your sentiments about the war. People are so cruel. Putin must be stopped!

    1. So far stopping Putin seems to be rather limited, tragically.

  10. Nobody except maybe Putin wants WWIII. How to avoid it with a madman and all that power? I'd hate to be a leader in any country right now despite what seems ethically right.

    1. This example with Putin who has so much power as occurs in autocracies should be a warning to all to make certain no person admiring him or advocating for an autocracy in their own country would be a danger to freedom should they ever be elected to a governmental position, I think.

  11. Dear Joared, the care of the majestic eagle for her young reminds me of many of the images coming out of the invasion and bombing of Ukraine. Mothers shepherding children onto trains and down the streets of strange cities and into shelters. We must find a way to show and teach and embrace the Oneness of all Creation. Peace.

    1. Mothers caring for their young, seeking protection from unwanted vicious intruders seems to occur for all creatures as you describe.
