CANNABIS & OLD FOLKS -- FALL -- NEWFOUNDLAND

REPUBLIC -- "If you can keep it."  [Democracy]

        Accountability for Jan. 6 insurrection

U.S. Select House Committee on Jan. 6th Hearings continue in the fall.

QUESTION:  Are there "echoes" we can observe in recent years and now of what preceded the Holocaust as shown in the new PBS Ken Burn's three program series with that title?

SEPTEMBER SONG -- Ray Conniff's arrangement.

Harry James Orchestra's triumphant tour of Japan in 1964.

Fall, my favorite season has arrived along with a week or so of cooler temperatures but summer is sneaking back this week to give us high 90' s to 100+ F (37+ C) here in Southern California, U.S.  I'm not complaining as I read about hurricane Fiona tearing through Newfoundland where WiseWebWoman ("Other Side of Sixty" Blog HERE) whose last writing featured photos of her beautiful St. John's city.   I await to read news from her after the storm hoping her city is spared.  Meanwhile, click on this PBS 9/24 report.

My Fiberoptic internet installation updated from my previous blogpost about our community finally receiving this speedier connection -- I have now been able to see how much faster it is when downloading, then installing Apple tech data.  This task was completed in only a few minutes compared to up to an hour or more required previously.

Cannabis use is a topic that has periodically come to the forefront in our city ever since ..... "California became the first state to allow medicinal cannabis use when voters passed the Compassionate Use Act in 1996.  Today, cannabis is legal in California for both medicinal and adult (recreational) use."  Laws and regulations HERE

Our residents like some other cities have resisted allowing such businesses selling Cannabis.  Now our City Council voted to place a measure on our November ballot seeking to establish a tax on businesses that sell, deliver, test, distribute, manufacture, process, and cultivate cannabis in our city.  It sets gross receipts tax rates for the sale of cannabis and hemp sales in the city.  There would need to be many further actions including some involving the public before any businesses could setup here.

Subsequently, following an educational presentation to our city council, a business existing in a nearby community established by a retired nurse and her daughter, who is also a nurse working in hospice offered that information to the public.   The nurse daughter has taken specialized training studying cannabis so provided in-person and virtually, an educational session on the substance.  They also sell cannabis and counsel purchasers on its use.  I chose to take the virtual session though at the one on site they shared some actual items for individual examination.

They presented filmed testimonials of a few cannabis users for various medical problems, discussed side effects including noting with use short term memory problems could occur which I wouldn't welcome.

It is not my intention to influence anyone to use or not use cannabis.  I've not used cannabis, but I do support controlled research especially for medicinal use which finally began some years ago.   I do think seeking the latest information on cannabis would be most appropriate before using the product, including consultation with a knowledgeable person such as this nurse appears to be.

The use of cannabis continues to be federally illegal.   The Center of Disease Control (CDC) position on cannabis you may read HEREVarious reliable medical internet sites also provide detailed information.

Meanwhile, I've found the anecdotal reports of those who have used the various cannabis products being legally sold now to be of interest.

Cannabis use for medicinal purposes was a discussion topic on Ronni Bennett's "Time Goes By" blog.  "Marijuana and Old Folks" she wrote about 1/31/2020 describing her views with many of her readers sharing their own perspective and experiences. You may read that blog post HERE.   (Note:  A direct link does not work I discovered after publishing this post.  You must scroll down to Categories on that  right side bar home page, click on Health,  next you scroll down that last page of blog post title listings for the blog title above.)

The use of cannabis continues to be controversial with some unresolved concerns.  I would consult with my doctor regarding use in case there could be conflicts with other medications.   Attitudes have obviously softened allowing selective use medicinally and recreationally in some locales.  Check for what is legal where you live if you are interested in cannabis.

  1. All safe here, thanks Joared. Only the western side of the island and not the eastern where I live was affected. Devastating in the west, houses washed out to sea, etc., but Puerto Rico (where I once stayed) was devastated and it's heartbreaking what climate change is wreaking on our fragile planet. I watched part one of Ken Burns' doc and was so shocked that Hitler got his ideas about race and purging and anti-Semitism from the U.S.
I tried CBD oil many times and no effect on my pain. BUT I smell cannabis in the halls of my building so many elders are smoking weed. I would try it but being an ex-smoker I hesitate.

    1. Glad to hear you're safe but certainly sorry about all the others who were subjected to Fiona. Yes, our treatment of those the U.S. enslaved had more adverse effect than generally known. I agree that smoke from anything into our lungs would be reason to hesitate that means of using cannabis.

  2. We do have medical cannabis here but not recreational. I would like to try the edibles for insomnia but haven't really pursued it. Maybe soon.

    1. Those TGB commenters and Ronni wrote of different types of cannabis they took orally and need for variation.

  3. I tried cannabis a couple of times when I was young, but it didn't do anything for me. I've thought of trying CBD products for the odd medical problem, but they're horrendously expensive here. However I know a lot of people have said that cannabis relieved medical conditions that weren't helped by conventional drugs.

    1. TGB commenters and Ronni wrote of some relief from certain medical conditions and sleep assist though not all had that experience. The unpredictability of dosage in the product has been suggested to be a problem.

The cannabis nurse I heard speak said to never purchase cannabis on the internet from a major internationally known company she named that I choose not to state here.

  4. Although I don't have cable television, I realized just now that I can watch the Ken Burns' series on my laptop. Will start watching it this afternoon.

Wisewebwoman's photos of St. John's are beautiful. I, too, hope that her city is spared. I'm shocked each time I see hurricane damage anywhere. I visited my sister in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, some time after Katrina and witnessed damage that still remained.

Fall is my favorite season, too. It's the best time of the year for seeing stars here, with less likelihood of heavy cloud cover. I love all the fall colors, not only the deciduous trees but the flowers that are still blooming and the clear blue sky and angle of light that is exquisite.

Although many of my friends thoroughly enjoyed marijuana and felt relaxed and happy, it never agreed with me. I either didn't feel anything special or I felt a sense of confusion and terror. I certainly didn't get high. I do know that it is indispensable for numerous medical conditions and am glad that it is no longer illegal. So many have benefitted from marijuana. I know that medical marijuana doesn't have the THC that was a problem for me but I don't have any medical issues that would require CBD. It was suggested for my rosacea by a staff member our local food and grocery co-op but the cost was prohibitive and then my rosacea cleared up on its own when my dermatologist (who never suggested CBD) suggested that I try doing nothing after years of trying everything she had suggested. Her final suggestion was laser surgery but I told her I couldn't afford that. At that point, she said to try doing nothing. Doing nothing cleared up my rosacea to the mild state it was in when it was first noted by the dermatologist!

    Always appreciate your musical offerings.

    1. Interesting about your CBD experience for rosacea. I understand THC in some cannabis products may be a choice the buyer can make when purchasing from a medical dispensary but I'm no authority on the matter.

  5. I don't think I'd ever try cannabis because I remember seeing people get really weird/silly/stupid smoking pot but I do think it should be studied scientifically because there is something there that too many people think helps them. Maybe its just psychological because it feels good for a few hours but it's time to find out what it does to the brain that could be used for pain with less side effects than conventional drugs.

    1. People you describe seeing probably were experiencing the effects of cannabis with THC, the getting high component. I understand the medicinal cannabis does not have the THC, or a very minimal amount at best so that high is not experienced. There has been some brain research but there needs to be more. Nausea experienced by some cancer patients has been reported to be relieved.

  6. I was doing freelance writing/editing job for the owner of a dispensary trying to get a license in Ohio. He gave me some CBD oil for my cervical myofasciitis pain. I didn't notice any relief after using it for several weeks.
Medical marijuana is currently the only cannabis legal here for a few dozen recognized conditions.

    1. Interesting to learn of your experience. The effectiveness of these products seems to be variable for individuals based on other anecdotal reports I've read.

  7. Long before I decided to take music seriously (solo singing lessons starting six years ago) I played the trumpet, but only by ear. This meant that certain more complex songs - The Lady Is A Tramp is a good example - faded into incoherence when I was faced with a minor key or (even worse) when I thought I was. Often I was reduced to doh-ray-me stuff like Hymns Ancient and Modern. Even so, I had my trumpeting heroes, one of whom was Harry James, possibly because he didn't find it necessary to wear squalid clothing, I'm not sure September Song is an apt choice for a swinging band, and the orchestral intro has some quite weird phrases, Never mind. We wait for Harry to stop pretending he's conducting anyone and there he is with what I can only characterise as smoothed-out brassiness. Nice work if you can get it.

    1. Interesting you played trumpet by ear. I recall my attraction to Harry James with his trumpet from his appearance in movies I saw as a young girl. I may have been influenced to be partial to the trumpet because my decade older brother played the trumpet through high school and years later after his WWII service to earn a few $$$ while in D.C. college. I selected this Sept Song more for the title than as an example of James musical skills. Currently, I especially enjoy Chris Botti though there are numerous others I could name.
