  1. It's ironic that when I grew up Memorial/Decoration Day was always about going to our family cemeteries and decorating the graves as well as doing any minor cleanup work that was required around the markers. It was about family picnics or reunions but never about the wars and our soldiers. I wonder if it changed with the Vietnam War where there were new costs to fighting a war or whether it was just the region in which I grew up.

    1. I expect people may have commemorated it differently if family not centralized living in an area, or didn’t have a specific cemetery where family buried. I remember it mostly during WWII and always knew of it as memorializing military who died. American Legion raised funds then for veterans, their families, and I recall soliciting donations on the downtown streets of our 15k plus size town. I was so proud one of those years for collecting the most with our red buddy poppies.

  3. We do need to remember and honor those who gave all. The freedoms we enjoy are thier gift. Just wish there was no need for such a day but man seems intent in settling differences and satisfying greed by sacrificing their best in battle. Thank you to all those young men that never got to be old men.

    1. I, too, wish there was no need for such a memorialization, but seems there are always those who would deprive us of our freedoms one way or another, often using military force.

  4. Here in Hawaii, it's turned into a family remembrance day as well and family graves are festooned with flowers. However, Punchbowl cemetery is also beautiful with plumeria leis over all those who gave their lives for our country.

  5. The Punchbowl site and Memorial Day Service is lovely with a YouTube video I featured here in 2013: https://joared-along.blogspot.com/2013/05/.

  6. What a shame that so many young men have to die in the name of military adventures that are hard to justify to say the least.
